PERTH (miningweekly.com) – ASX-listed Mineral Deposits Limited (MDL) has welcomed the Norwegian government's support for its TiZir joint venture (JV) with France’s Eramet in Norway.

A government agency would provide $16.2-million in funding to the TiZir JV to upgrade its titanium and iron (TTI) facility, which smelts ilmenite to produce a high titanium oxide slag which was sold to pigment producers, as well as a high-purity pig iron, which was sold to ductile iron foundries.

The TTI facility produced about 200 000 t of titanium slag and 110 000 t/y of high-purity pig iron.

MDL said the JV would spend between $70-million and $80-million to upgrade and refurbish the facility, allowing TiZir the flexibility to produce either chloride or sulphide titanium slag, and providing the ability to alternate between products as dictated by supply and demand dynamics within the market.

Further, ilmenite from MDL's Grande Cote project, in Senegal, would be used as feedstock to produce chloride titanium slag at the TTI facility, ensuring supply of ilmenite from within the group and reducing any reliance on third-party sales.

As part of the upgrade, the TTI facility would install, test and continue the development of a more environmentally friendly upgrading process that could ultimately reduce the projects’ carbon emissions by as much as 90%, and reduce energy consumption by up to 40%.
