Caterpillar’s Southern African dealer Barloworld Equipment has launched the Cat B20, B30 and B35 hydraulic hammer line-up in top-mount configuration for hydraulic excavators.

The company says that the units are purpose-built for the robust applications typically found in Africa and are suitable for municipal, general construction, demolition, quarrying and mining applications.

These units are designed for fitment across a range of Cat carriers; examples include the B20, which is suitable for use in the Cat 320D2 L, and the B30, which can be used on the Cat 323D2 L and the Cat 329D2 L machines. Additionally, the B35 can be used for the Cat 336D2 L and Cat 340D2 L excavators.

“A distinctive feature is their excellent power-to-weight ratio, outstanding impact output and simplicity,” asserts Barloworld Equipment product and application specialist Craig Christie.

He adds that the weld-free hydraulic kit mounting supplied is a standard feature. Christie also notes that the high-pressure accumulator protects the carrier’s hydraulic circuit by absorbing pulsation spikes created during the firing stroke.

He explains that Caterpillar’s B-Series gas-fired hammers are characterised by their top-mount rectangular configuration, which increases impact power by keeping hammer and stick forces in line.

“The top-mount style also provides a larger work area and optimal operator visibility. Additionally, the top-mount bracket configuration transfers far fewer forces and corresponding bending stresses into the end of the stick, lowering the overall impact on machine structures,” states Christie, adding that the hammer’s speed and frequency can be adjusted easily to suit specific applications.

He highlights that, in terms of maintenance, the full length side plate design provides personnel with much easier access to service points and change-outs. “A prime example is the field-replaceable lower tool bushing.”

The machine’s tools come in moil, cone, chisel and blunt specifications and are all manufactured using high-grade heat-treated steel.

“Every aspect of these hammers has been designed and tested to provide years of trouble-free daily operation,” Christie concludes.
