Name of the Project
New manganese export terminal (NMET).

Location
Port of Ngqura, in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth), in the Eastern Cape, South Africa.

Project Owner/s
Coega Development Corporation (CDC) is the implementing agent on behalf of the Transnet National Ports Authority.

Project Description
The CDC issued a request for proposal (RFP) on October 11, 2021, inviting experienced service providers to submit proposals for the development of the NMET.

The project will unlock significant investment in the mining sector through the improvement of logistics infrastructure and services and is, therefore, crucial in advancing government’s objectives in the Economic Reconstruction and Recovery Plan.

The project entails the relocation of the manganese and liquid bulk terminals from the Port of Port Elizabeth to the Port of Ngqura, both in the Eastern Cape.

The manganese terminal at the Port of Ngqura will have a capacity of 16-million tons a year, scalable to 22-million tons a year, while the yearly capacity at the Port of Saldanha, in the Western Cape, will be increased to six-million tons a year.

Suitably qualified service providers will be required to design a technical solution for a covered or enclosed manganese stockyard, and a new export terminal.

The decision to move away from an open stockyard is based on a desire to ensure a near-zero dust facility.
