The Minerals Council South Africa has welcomed the appointment of nine new members to State-owned Transnet’s board, which is now chaired by former Minerals Council VP Andile Sangqu.

“The Minerals Council looks forward to establishing a working relationship with the new board as Transnet, business and the government strive to stabilise rail and port performance.

“This comes in addition to growing the capacity of these export channels to provide a cost-effective and efficient logistics platform for the mining industry and broader economy,” the council says.

The industry body adds that it looks forward to collaborating with the new Transnet board to take forward and implement urgent solutions to the challenges that Transnet is experiencing.

“The Minerals Council is actively participating in the National Logistics Crisis Committee – set up by President Cyril Ramaphosa in conjunction with corporate alliance Business for South Africa – to address concerns about Transnet and transport logistics,” it adds.
