JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Initial drilling at Africa-focused Ferrex’s 309 km2 Mebaga direct shipping ore (DSO) iron-ore project in Gabon has underpinned the project’s potential to hold a significant DSO-grade deposit, Ferrex MD Dave Reeves said on Wednesday.

The nine-hole diamond drilling campaign showed a wide intercept if DSO-grade iron-ore mineralisation in Hole 8, with low levels of deleterious elements detected.

“The intercept in Hole 8 is the most encouraging of all received from this programme.  As the furthest south-east hole to be drilled to date, the thick interval of DSO-grade mineralisation at more than 55% iron highlights the potential for along-strike extensions,” Reeves said.

He stated that the ongoing exploration programme into 2014 would involve testing for strike extensions in the 1 km drilled area, as well as the testing of high-priority targets identified along the full 19 km of strike.

Ferrex also said the Mebaga project already had excellent infrastructure in place, as it was located 30 km from a sealed highway and 100 km north of the Trans-Gabon railway.

Meanwhile, the iron-ore and manganese development company was also conducting a bankable feasibility study at its Nayega manganese project, in Togo, and expected to develop this project during 2014.

A scoping study indicated that Nayega could produce 250 000 t/y of manganese concentrate at 38% with an initial capital expenditure of under $15-million.

Further, the company also held the Malelane iron-ore concession in South Africa that had the potential to produce 1.8-million tons of beneficiated ore a year.
