TORONTO (miningweekly.com) – The Mining Association of Canada (MAC) on Wednesday appointed its first female chairperson in its 78-year history, by electing Iron Ore Company of Canada president and CEO Zoë Yujnovich to serve a two-year term.

Effective immediately, Yujnovich replaced former Xstrata Nickel CEO Ian Pearce, who had served as chairperson from June 2012 until his resignation from Xstrata Nickel in May.

"Our association has had increasing female representation on the MAC board for many years, but Zoë's appointment to chair is an important milestone and signifies the growing leadership role of women in mining," MAC president and CEO Pierre Gratton said.

Yujnovich had been an active member of the MAC board and executive committee from 2010, as first vice-chair. In this capacity, she helped guide the association's activities and supported the industry's progress in many areas.
