JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Southern Africa-focused emerging diamond producer Lucara Diamond Corp on Tuesday announced that it had sold 16 single stones totalling 1 028 ct, from its Karowe mine in Botswana, for gross revenues of $24.7-million, at its second exceptional stone tender.

The revenue amounted to $24 026 a carat sold.

The highest value stone was a 135.4 ct diamond that was sold for $6.37-million, while three additional diamonds were also sold for more than $2.5-million each.

“This sale demonstrates that the market remains very strong for large and exceptional diamonds, adding significantly to the value of Karowe mine, which continues to outperform expectations. We could not be happier with the result," Lucara president and CEO William Lamb commented.

Lucara further stated that it would hold one regular tender during the third quarter of this year, where 80 000 ct, which would include more than 30 single stones larger than 10.8 ct, would be on sale.

Meanwhile, the company announced the appointment of Dr John Armstrong, who had more than 25 years combined experience in mineral exploration, mining and government, as VP of mineral resources, effective September 3.

Armstrong replaced former Lucara VP of mineral resources Dr Larry Ott who was retiring, but who would be retained on a consultancy basis.
