Lonmin shuts down two furnaces
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – An undisclosed “incident” has led to the shutdown of JSE-listed Lonmin’s processing division's Number 2 furnace, the company said in a statement on Tuesday.
This comes as the platinum producer shut down its Number 1 furnace for a planned upgrade of the hearth and shell.
A full inspection of the Number 2 furnace would be undertaken later this week once the furnace had cooled, after which the company would embark on repairs, which could take up to 40 days.
“The three Pyromet furnaces, which have around 50% of our capacity requirements, continue to operate,” Lonmin added.
The mining group said it would provide further details following an assessment of options for the Number 1 furnace and the impact of the halted operations of the Number 2 furnace.
No injuries were reported.
Meanwhile, following a fatality at the Merensky section of the Marikana mine K3 shaft last week, drilling and blasting operations at the site had been suspended until the investigation was completed.
