JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Platinum miner Lonmin on Tuesday said it had completed the repairs and maintenance work to its Number One furnace.

The furnace was shut down in December after a leak of molten furnace matte was detected, requiring the replacement of the mechanical structure and refractories below the tap hole and the copper tap block.

The miner, at the time, decided to bring forward its scheduled maintenance shutdown, which was initially set for October this year.

“First matte was successfully tapped on March 9 and the Number One furnace is now operating in line with expectations,” Lonmin said in a statement, adding that the Number Two furnace had also been ramped up and stabilised as planned.
