PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Junior gold producer Octagonal Resources has restarted openpit mining at its Black Reef project, in Victoria.

First gold production has been scheduled for June.

The miner said on Tuesday that mining of the Black Reef openpit started in August last year, with the removal and stockpiling of soil and sub-soil. However, development of the openpit was placed on hold shortly thereafter, allowing the company to focus on the removal and processing of the tailings from the Kangaroo Flat mine.

Octagonal said that now that processing of the tailings ore was nearing completion, mining of the Black Reef openpit had restarted, and ore was scheduled for processing after the Kangaroo Flat tailings.

The Black Reef deposit forms part of the larger Wehla project, which has historically produced some 100 000 oz of high-grade gold.

Octagonal noted that once the company gained a better understanding of the nugget effect and the structural controls on the distribution of gold in the Wehla gold field, this information could justify a larger openpit mining operation in the gold field.
