PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Rare earths miner Iluka has reported higher production and sales volumes in the June quarter, with revenues nearly doubling.

Zircon, rutile and synthetic rutile production in the Junee quarter increased to 216 700 t during the three months to June, up from the 150 900 t produced in the March quarter, while sales volumes in the same period increased from 110 600 t to 176 400 t.

Sales revenue in the June quarter was reported at A$455.6-million, up from the A$256.7-million reported in the previous quarter.

Iluka told shareholders on Wednesday that heavy mineral concentrate (HMC) production at the Jacinth-Ambrosia project, in South Australia, reached 59 000 t during the quarter, down from 95 000 t in the first quarter of 2023, on the back of lower ore grades. However, production in the June quarter was in line with the planned mining sequence.

At the Cataby operation, in Western Australia, HMC production reached 144 000 t, up from 118 000 t produced in the previous quarter, owing to higher ore treatment volumes and ore grades.

The Narngulu mineral separation plant processed both Cataby and Jacinth-Ambrosia HMC, producing 107 000 t of zircon and 23 000 t of rutile, up from the previous quarter’s 59 300 t of zircon sand and 8 000 t of rutile.

Total synthetic rutile production from Capal reached 87 000 t during the quarter, up from 83 600 t in the previous quarter, with both SR1 and SR2 operating at full capacity. Both of the kilns will be offline in the second half of the year owing to planned maintenance.
