The world’s biggest mining company, BHP Billiton, has appointed ex-Rio Tinto executive Andrew Mackenzie to fill the position left empty when Marius Kloppers became CEO of the company – CE of nonferrous materials.

Mackenzie was previously CE of diamonds and industrial materials at Rio Tinto, which BHP Billiton earlier this month announced an offer to buy for shares.

He had also served petroleum giant BP Petrochemicals for 22 years, last as group vice-president.

Mackenzie’s employment contract with Rio Tinto contained “obligations in relation to a period of notice that he will observe”, BHP Billiton said, adding that no start date has yet been fixed.
