ELB Engineering Services (Pty) Ltd (ELB), is pleased to announce that they have been awarded the contract to design, supply, install and commission two mobile ship loaders at Transnet Port Terminals’ (TPT) Saldanha Terminal – a strategic node of the movement of iron ore in South Africa. The ship loaders come complete with a mobile truck loader, with a capacity of loading 1000 tons of iron ore or manganese per hour across both Handymax and Panamax and, due to arrive at the terminal in the next 16 months.

The use of mobile systems throughput in ports and inland terminals is ever expanding globally. The innovative nature of the mobile modular range of equipment means operators have the ultimate flexible solution for handling dry bulk in the port/terminal.

The mobile modular range of equipment offers many benefits to operations including:

  • Increased mobility increases flexibility when handling dry bulk
  • No civil construction or planning permissions are required
  • Lower capital expenditure investment when compared to fixed infrastructure and mobile harbour cranes
  • Typically lower operating costs versus traditional bulk material solutions
  • Environmental considerations – integrated dust extraction and containment systems
  • Ideal for multi-cargo berths when handling dry bulk/containers/break bulk
  • Ability to handle a wide variety of dry bulk materials with the same equipment
  • Useful for stevedoring companies to ensuring lower costs per tonne
  • Multi-functional equipment - same units for ship loading/ship-unloading, stacking and reclaiming
  • Short lead times from order to operational status – typically 18-32 weeks depending on the level of customisation

For this project and application, ELB has offered a 58m telescopic boom (TB 58) shiploader. This machine offers several features that enable it to be used effectively in combination with the ‘double sided’ mobile truck unloading system.
The Titan 800-6 AWT is a significant development in the truck unloader sector, building on the success of the many Titan solutions operating around the world.

The All Wheel Travel (AWT) mobile ship loader has become more and more the preferred method of mobility choice for port owners/operators who want to quickly move equipment on/off the quay as well as wanting much faster hatch change times. Telestack’s AWT technology has evolved over the past 5 years making the TB 58 AWT a potential game changer for many existing and planned terminals.

This project has been awarded to ELB on the back of the recently completed tippler refurbishment project at TPT’s Port Elizabeth Terminal and is one of the many projects that ELB has been privileged to have worked on with TPT over the last 10 years. We look forward to an exciting, mutually beneficial, long lasting alliance with TPT on the back of this mobile solutions project which is a ‘fit-for-purpose’ solution.

ELB’s technical partner Telestack of Ireland has also been involved as leaders in the design and supply of mobile materials handling equipment including ship loaders, ship unloaders, bulk reception feeders, rail loading/unloading solutions, radial telescopic stackers, mobile hopper feeders, track mounted conveyors and reclaim hoppers.
