The 2017 Investing in African Mining Indaba was a “great success” for drilling services and equipment, as well as performance tooling, provider Boart Longyear, as it secured deals and has several prospective projects to follow up on, says general sales manager Andre van Heerden.

“The Mining Indaba is always an important event for Boart Longyear, where we partner with existing and potential clients to help drive their success by supplying them with the highest-quality and most innovative drilling equipment and products.”

Such products include Boart Longyear’s TruCore orientation system and new Nitro-Clamp, which the company displayed at its Mining Indaba booth at the Cape Town International Convention Centre from February 6 to 9.

Van Heerden explains that TruCore, Boart Longyear’s first core-orientation tool, is easy to use and highly accurate, with wireless communication, a corrosion-resistant steel body and a field replaceable battery.

“Core orientation is easier with TruCore, as there is no need to disassemble the tool to obtain orientation marks. A PQ adapter allows the HQ tool to cover both [tube] sizes, reducing the need to rent a PQ- and an HQ- [sized] tool.”

Boart Longyear’s new Nitro-Clamp replaces the wedge foot clamp on a rig and is available for rod and casing capacities of up to PWT.

“The Nitro-Clamp uses spring-closing jaws, instead of the wedge foot clamp, and offers higher weight-holding capacity, full torque to break joints and eliminates the use of hand tools,” Van Heerden says, adding that the “revolutionary” Nitro-Clamp removes the risk of losing rods down the hole during drilling.

“The Nitro-Clamp does this by providing full clamping force each time it is closed. A wedge- style clamp, in comparison, relies partially on rod weight to create a greater clamping force.”
