Global diamond company De Beers' production decreased to 7.4-million carats for the third quarter ended September 30.

That compares with the 9.6-million carats produced in the third quarter of last year and the 7.6-million carats produced in the second quarter of this year.

The lower output was primarily owing to the planned reduction in South Africa as the Venetia mine transitions to underground operations and begins the ramp-up of production, as well as owing to planned maintenance in Botswana.

De Beers also has operations in Namibia and Canada.
