Newmont Mining Corporation  (0.10 MB)

Newmont Mining Corporation today announced the appointment of Dr. Elaine Dorward-King as Executive Vice President of Sustainability & External Relations. Dr. Dorward-King will begin her new role with Newmont on March 18 and will assume responsibility for the company’s environmental, social responsibility, community and government relations functions. Dr. Dorward-King joins Newmont from Rio Tinto, where she most recently served as Managing Director of Richards Bay Minerals (RBM) in South Africa — one of the world’s largest and lowest-cost producers of titanium dioxide and zircon. Under her leadership, RBM improved its safety performance, leadership development systems, and advanced its globally-recognized environmental rehabilitation and highly regarded black economic empowerment programs. Elaine is an accomplished leader in developing and implementing sustainable development, safety, health and environmental programs in the mining, chemical and engineering consulting sectors,‖ said Gary Goldberg, Newmont’s President and Chief Operating Officer. ―I look forward to Elaine joining the Newmont team and contributing to our success.

Prior to her role at Richards Bay Minerals, Dr. Dorward-King was the Global Head of Health, Safety and Environment at Rio Tinto for eight years where she led a step-change in Rio Tinto’s safety and environmental performance. She also held leadership positions with Rio Tinto’s copper and borates businesses. Prior to that, she worked for Ebasco Environmental and for Monsanto Company as a chemist, research specialist and product manager. In addition to her 25 years of business experience, Dr. Dorward-King has authored numerous scientific papers, contributed to five environmental science books and received numerous awards and honors for her work in advancing safety and environmental responsibility. She currently serves on the Board of Directors for Project WET, a global non-profit organization focused on water awareness education and training, and on the Science Advisory Board for The Institute of Environmental and Human Health at Texas Tech University.
