A 5 t diesel, hydraulic underground mining locomotive owned by mining major Sibanye-Stillwater has been converted into an environment-friendly battery powered electric version by Gauteng-based underground railway control systems manufacturer Battery Electric.

The company will now look to apply its retrofit technology to other off-highway vehicles with internal combustion engines so that their owners can also enjoy conversion's environmental, safety and financial benefits.

Watch the video in with Battery Electric design engineer Marnus Marais for more information on the company's diesel machine conversion technology.
