Aureus rubbishes arbitration request at New Liberty mine
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Following the termination of its civil and earthworks contract at the New Liberty gold mine, in Liberia, in August 2014, International Construction & Engineering (ICE) has lodged a request for arbitration against dual-listed Aureus Mining.
ICE’s contract was terminated when works were between 60% and 70% complete. The work was completed by directly engaged labour and contractors supervised by the project's construction management contractor DRA Projects.
Aureus Mining on Tuesday said ICE’s request for arbitration was “frivolous, without merit and opportunistic”, noting that, although it had not received sufficient details to substantiate ICE's claim, based on a review of the contents of the request and the relevant facts, Aureus' management believed no material amount would be found payable to ICE.
The company added that it would vigorously defend itself against the claims made by ICE.
It further noted that ICE’s request would have no impact on the New Liberty operations.
