Aureus gets approval for Liberty processing plant restart
JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Liberian Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy has approved the restart of the processing plant at dual-listed Aureus Mining’s New Liberty gold mine.
The company in early May temporarily suspended processing operations at the mine owing to problems with the detoxification circuit, which had not been operating to original design specifications, resulting in higher concentrations of weak acid dissociated cyanide in the process effluent.
The plant had been operating with process water in a closed circuit, with zero discharge from the tailings storage facility (TSF); however, recent heavy rainfall had inadvertently resulted in a small overflow of effluent from the TSF into the wetlands area within the mining lease area.
During the suspension of processing operations, Aureus undertook various modifications and optimisation activities within the process plant and detoxification circuit, with the assistance of technical specialists from Maelgwyn Mineral Services Africa to ensure the plant operates within its original design specifications.
It also took the opportunity to complete a reline of the ball mill, fitting it with heavier duty liners and improved lifters and grates. It also increased the capacity of the oxygen plant to provide supplementary oxygen to both the carbon-in-leach and detoxification circuits.
The company now had adequate funding available to support working capital needs and preparations were under way for the plant prestart procedure.
Mining operations had continued throughout the plant suspension period.
