Deploying technology in the fossil fuels mining and consumption industries can accelerate innovative practices that are less harmful to the environment, consequently ensuring that coal is used sustainably, says coal procurement and mining development company Alpha Resources and Investments CEO Selim Kaymak.

Technology is important in advanced combustion applications and integrated gasification combined-cycle systems, as it can improve the efficiency of coal-fired power plants.

Kaymak adds that carbon capture and storage technologies can capture carbon dioxide emissions from coal combustion, but stresses that these techniques can be feasible only through supportive policies, incentives and further investments in research and development.

Alpha Resources and Investments has faced some operational challenges regarding logistical constraints, market volatility and regulatory compliance.

Nonetheless, he highlights the important role the coal mining industry can play in supporting the green economy by pursuing opportunities for coal beneficiation and a diversification into value-added products such as coal-to-liquid fuels and carbon-based materials.

Kaymak adds that the company has a “deep commitment” to responsible and sustainable mining practices in the fossil fuels sector, stating that investments into clean coal technologies represent a “ripe opportunity” to reduce emissions and lower its carbon footprint.

In terms of other measures to deal with environmental protection, Alpha Resources prioritises the implementation of best practices in land reclamation and rehabilitation, with the company also actively engaging with local communities and stakeholders to ensure more transparency, accountability and social responsibility in its operations.

“. . . we leverage advanced technologies to enhance environmental monitoring, resource use and operational efficiency. For instance, we use drones and satellite imagery for environmental surveillance and land rehabilitation planning.”

Kaymak adds that the company uses modern mining equipment and automation systems to reduce waste generation while continuing to invest towards infrastructure development to improve operational efficiency and reduce transport costs.

“Through strategic planning and investments in technology, we aim to mitigate environmental impacts and contribute to a sustainable mining future. We are also actively exploring opportunities in critical minerals and the green energy sector to further diversify our offerings and support the transition to a low-carbon economy,” he concludes.
