WESTERN CAPE QUARRY:

The 60-year-old AfriSam Peninsula Quarry, in Killarney, Cape Farms, uses drill-and-blast methods to mine greywacke stone, which is processed at the plant using mainly a jaw crusher and two cone crushers to produce a range of concrete aggregates for the Western Cape region. The quarry, which exposes the folded geology of the Western Cape and which led to the cessation of quarrying along the eastern face, has 120 years of life ahead of it, AfriSam construction materials executive Avi Bhoora told Mining Weekly during a recent media tour of the operation.
