South Africa will inevitably have to take on more debt as it seeks to address the economic, health and social damage caused by the Covid-19 pandemic. That said, the country needs to be extremely wary of allowing the pandemic to light the fuse on a full-blown debt crisis. A failure in this regard could result in an explosion that will take years, probably decades, to repair.
