The Intelligent Transport Society South Africa (ITSSA) this year introduced a single biennial award for an outstanding achievement in the intelligent transport systems (ITS) industry in South Africa, for a project completed in the preceding two-year period.

This first award was made at the i-Transport and UATP Go Green – Go Smart conference, convened around the theme of the future of public transport, which was held in Johannesburg in February.

The shortlist of qualifying entrants were the MyCiTy bus transport system for itsfare collection project; Traffic Management Technologies for its research into, and development of a state-of-the-art, multipurpose camera; and the South African National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) for its freeway incident management project.

The award was made to the Sanral freeway incident management project, with associates Kimley-Horn and Techso as the professional team, and TETI as the contractor.

The entries were adjudicated by a panel of three independent judges. The panel consisted of two past ITSSA presidents, namely Mike vanTonder, of Aurecon, and Darryll Thomas, of the Johannesburg Roads Agency.

The third judge was Ivan Reutner, a past ITSSA board member.

ITSSA CEO Dr Paul Vorster was a non-voting member of the panel.
