PERTH (miningweekly.com) – Copper miner Tiger Resources is expecting to produce its first copper cathode from the Kipoi project, in the Democratic Republic of Congo, by the second quarter of next year.

The miner reported on Wednesday that the construction of the Stage 2 solvent-extraction and electrowinning (SX-EW) plant was on schedule, and remained within budget.

About 25 000 t of copper cathode would be produced in the first 12 months of the SX-EW plant, with production set to increase to 50 000 t over the following 12 months.

In addition to the SX-EW plant, Tiger would also produce about 39 000 t of copper in concentrate from the heavy media separation plant at Kipoi during 2014.

MD Brad Marwood said that construction of the SX-EW plant was continuing ahead of schedule.

“Construction of the Stage 2 plant commenced in January and to have the project at 74% by the end of October shows how effectively our team and contractors are working. The project has remained on budget and there have been zero lost-time injuries, which are signs of a project that has been well planned, well managed, and well executed.”
