The town of Chiatura, 220 km north-west of Tbilisi, in Georgia, was built on a bedrock of manganese ore. Sky cars, like the one shown in this picture, were built to facilitate manganese mining activity at the time of the Soviet Union. The 15 sky cars, which still operate along 21 routes spanning 6 km, have proved the quickest and most convenient way of getting around for the last 60 years.
