Thalanga Operation, Australia

Name: Thalanga Operation.

Location: The mine is located about 55 km west of Charters Towers, in Northern Queensland, in Australia.

Mine Owner/s: Red River Resources.

Brief Description: Production from the Thalanga Operation started from the West 45 deposit in 2017. In 2020, production from this deposit ceased, owing to depletion.

Ore is being sourced from the Far West underground mine, which started production in 2019. Far West will be the sole source of ore until the Liontown deposit is developed.

Brief History: Thalanga was discovered in 1975 and production started in 1989. The mine was acquired by Red River Resources from Kagara in 2014 for A$6.5-million.

Primary Metals/Minerals: Copper, lead and zinc concentrates.

Secondary Metals/Minerals: Gold and silver.

Geology/Mineralisation: The Thalanga Operation is located in the highly prospective Cambro-Ordovician Mt Windsor volcanic belt, which contains several known polymetallic volcanic-hosted massive sulphide deposits and gold deposits.

Reserves: Total proven and probable reserves as at March 2020 were estimated at 1.16-million tonnes grading 1.2% copper, 1.5% lead, 4.5% zinc, 0.2 g/t gold and 40 g/t silver.

Resources: Total mineral resources as at March 2020 were estimated at 6.73-million tonnes grading 1% copper, 1.9% lead, 6.7% zinc, 0.9% gold and 39 g/t silver.

Mining Method: Underground.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: Thalanga comprises a 650 000 t/y polymetallic processing facility capable of producing separate copper, lead

and zinc concentrates; a tailings storage facility; and site offices, workshops and change facilities.

Site access is by sealed road and the Thalanga Operation is run as a residential operation, with the workforce predominately living in Charters Towers.

Prospects: Red River is mining the Far West deposit and is developing the Liontown project, a proposed combined openpit and underground development, with a conceptual mine life of about ten years.
