Stratoni mine, Greece

Name of the Mine
Stratoni mine.

Location
Halkidiki peninsula, Greece.

Mine Owner/s
Eldorado Gold.

Brief Description
Stratoni is an underground, silver/lead/zinc mine comprising the Mavres Petres and Madem Lakkos deposits.

On October 15, 2021, Eldorado announced that operations at Stratoni would be suspended in the fourth quarter of that year.

Brief History
Eldorado acquired the Stratoni mine through the acquisiton of European Goldfields in 2012.

Primary Metals/Minerals
Silver/lead/zinc.

Secondary Metals/Minerals
Not stated.

Geology/Mineralisation
Stratoni is a silver/lead/zinc carbonate replacement deposit that is hosted within marble of the Kerdilya formation. The deposit is localised along the south-dipping Stratoni fault, a major structural feature and important mineralising corridor in the centre of the Stratoni region.

The fault separates the Kerdylia formation – host to the carbonate replacement deposits – to the north, from the Vertiskos formation – host to the Skouries porphyry gold/copper deposit – to the south. Mineralisation extends for at least 8 km along the fault, with the historically mined Madem Lakkos deposit to the east of Mavres Petres, and Piavitsa, the focus of Eldorado Gold’s current exploration activity, to the west.

Reserves
Stratoni has no reported mineral reserves.

Resources
Total measured and indicated silver resources as at September 30, 2021, were estimated at 1.35-million tonnes grading 153 g/t silver, 6.1% lead and 8.7% zinc. Inferred resources were estimated at 1.7-million tonnes grading 162 g/t silver, 6.2% lead and 9.3% zinc.

Mining Method
Underground.

Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The mine uses a multistage flotation process to extract a lead/silver concentrate and a zinc concentrate.

Prospects
The mine is on care and maintenance while exploration drilling continues to expand reserves and resources. Eldorado has said that it will evaluate resuming operations subject to exploration success and positive results of further technical and economic review.
