South32 suspends operations at Groote Eylandt

Operations at Groote Eylandt Mining Company (Gemco) have been suspended because of a tropical cyclone in the Northern Territory, diversified miner South32 reported on Monday.

The severe weather conditions caused structural damage to the wharf, the company said, adding that it would only be able to determine the full impact of damage when access to the port is resorted.

Located on an island in the Gulf of Carpentaria, Gemco is a major producer of manganese and is owned by South32 (60%) and Anglo American (40%).

According to local reports, Groote Eylandt was hit with almost 600 mm of rain over the weekend as Cyclone Megan brought a severe weather system.

Last year, Gemco contributed 3.5-million wet metric tonnes of ore to South32’s manganese production.
