They have cut off the flow of water from a well that supplies one of the biggest silver mines in Africa. Dozens of villagers have spent the last three years camping on a hill in Morocco’s Great Atlas mountains to stop the toxic waste produced by mining company Société Métallurgique d’Imider (SMI) from flooding their waterways. They also want SMI to provide locals with more jobs.
