During an interview at the Trump Turnberry golf course, in Scotland, US President Donald Trump described the European Union (EU) as a “foe”. The comment prompted European Council president Donald Tusk to Tweet: “America and the EU are best friends. Whoever says we are foes is spreading fake news.” Trump’s remark was but one of several diplomatic shank shots that served to further undermine America’s standing in the world. He also used the tumultuous tour to spar with Nato leaders, suggest that former UK Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson would make a “great Prime Minister” and to urge British Prime Minister Theresa May to sue the EU over Brexit.
