SHAMEFUL GOVERNANCE

Chinese philosopher Confucius is said to have expressed the following about governance: “In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of. In a country badly governed, wealth is something to be ashamed of.” In South Africa, where governance is now equated with money and expediency rather than service delivery, the poor face extreme exposure not only to social ills but also to the natural elements – ones that are becoming increasingly hostile, as the recent deadly floods in KwaZulu-Natal demonstrated.
