JSE- and NYSE-listed gold miner DRDGold on Tuesday reported that an armed gang had gained entry to its Ergo plant, in Brakpan, South Africa, on Monday evening.

The gang escaped with a quantity of calcine concentrate, which is estimated to contain up to 17 kg of gold.

Chief security officer Bart Coetzee was killed during an exchange of gunfire with the gang.

In extending its condolences to Coetzee’s family, CEO Niël Pretorius said the company’s board of directors were “outraged” by the “callous and cowardly attack”.

Pretorius confirmed the company’s full support to the South African Police Service to ensure the criminals were brought to justice.
