Savannah mine, Australia

Name of the Mine
Savannah mine.

Location
About 240 km south of Kununurra, in the East Kimberley region of Western Australia.

Mine Owner/s
Panoramic Resources, through its subsidiary Savannah Nickel Mines.

Brief Description
The Savannah mine is a sulphide-rich nickel, copper and cobalt orebody.

Brief History
Savannah was built in 2003 and commissioned in late 2004. Operations continued until 2015 when lower nickel prices forced the closure of the operation.

Operations at Savannah restarted in 2021, following a rigorous technical and commercial assessment. Commercial production was achieved from on April 1, 2022.

Primary Metals/Minerals
Nickel, copper and cobalt.

Secondary Metals/Minerals
None stated.

Geology/Mineralisation
The Savannah mine is hosted by the layered mafic-ultramafic Savannah Intrusion.

Reserves
Total proven and probable reserves as at July 1, 2022, were estimated at 8.46-million tonnes grading 1.21% nickel, 0.58% copper and 0.09% cobalt.

Resources
Total measured, indicated and inferred resources as at July 1, 2022, were estimated at 13.87-million tonnes grading 1.52% nickel, 0.69% copper and 0.10 cobalt.

Mining Method
Underground mining conducted by mining contractor Barminco using mechanised, top-down longhole open stoping and paste backfill methods. Teleremote mining is being used to improve efficiency and safety outcomes.

Major Infrastructure/Equipment
The Savannah operation includes an underground mine, processing plant with a processing capacity of one-million tonnes a year, a paste-fill plant, a 180-room accommodation village, workshops, office buildings, tailings and water storage facilities, as well as other associated infrastructure.

The process plant comprises a conventional single-stage crusher, semiautogenous grinding mill, flotation, thickening and filtering stages to produce a bulk nickel, copper and cobalt concentrate.

Prospects
The discovery of the Upper Splay zone at the Savannah mine has demonstrated the strong probability of identifying new zones of mineralisation within the Savannah mining areas as drilling density increases over time.
