As highlighted by a number of commentators – and acknowledged by government itself – the recent reprieve given to South Africa by S&P Global Ratings is but the ‘end of the beginning’. The initiatives being pursued jointly by government, business and labour will have to be implemented to ensure that a downgrade is avoided by year-end. More importantly, implementation is required to place the economy back on a growth path.
