R2.1m tribute to a moral giant – Citi Foundation

In honour of the life of Nelson Mandela, the Citi Foundation is donating R2.1 Million to the Nelson Mandela Children’s Hospital in Johannesburg, which recognises Mr Mandela’s lifelong commitment to children.

The ambitious project - initiated by the Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund - aims to build a 200-bed academic and paediatric referral facility that will serve children across Southern Africa.

“The world has lost a true hero and stalwart for human rights and dignity. President Mandela’s passing is deeply saddening for the world as a whole and all of us at Citi mourn his loss,” says Donna Oosthuyse, Chief Country Officer for Citi South Africa. “We vividly remember the hope, anticipation and positive sentiment he brought to South Africa and, as one of the key proponents of abolishing apartheid, was responsible for Citi to be able to return to South Africa. We hope we can honour his legacy with our contribution to his dream.”

Throughout his life, Nelson Mandela strived to serve all mankind through the advocacy of peace and reconciliation. Until his last breath, he continued to attract people worldwide to his sustained struggle for justice and unwavering insistence on moral rectitude in all aspects of life – yet he remained a humble man.  “We are proud and grateful for the life of Nelson Mandela,” Oosthuyse says.

“On behalf of the global Citi team – more than 275 000 of us across the world – we salute you as a moral giant. Farewell Tata Madiba, and thank you.”  Rest in Peace, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
