Platinum must grab on to the coattails of the hydrogen economy with all the strength that it has

A few years back, platinum group metals mining analysts would fight shy of including hydrogen economy pull in their demand calculations. Today, that’s all changed and they’re falling over themselves to include every last bit of it in future value data.

This comes at a time when governments the world over are backing green hydrogen as a climate change mitigator and looking to platinum-catalysed fuel cells to drive trucks, trains, ships and planes. Even the electrolysers that generate the green hydrogen rely on platinum and iridium.

South Africa’s mining industry, government, development banks, labour and environmentalists must work together vigorously to make sure that the South African people benefit to the full from their awesome platinum group metals endowment. The good that platinum group metals can do for the people of the world must be communicated and it is up to South Africa to tell them, collectively.
