Pennsylvania Mining Complex, US

Name: Pennsylvania Mining Complex.

Location: The mining complex is located in the Greene and Washington counties, in the US.

Mine Owner/s: Consol Energy owns a 75% undivided interest in the Pennsylvania Mining Complex, and the remaining 25% is owned by Consol Coal Resources.

Brief Description: The Pennsylvania Mining Complex is the biggest underground coal mine complex, in North America.

The complex comprises the Bailey, Enlow Fork and Harvey mines and is considered among the safest and most productive complexes in the world.

Coal from the Pennsylvania Mining Complex is valued because of it high energy content measured in British thermal units, relatively low levels of sulphur and other impurities, and strong thermoplastic properties that enable it to be used in metallurgical as well as thermal applications.

The complex has the capacity to produce about 28.5-million tons of coal a year.

Brief History: The Bailey, Enlow Fork and Harvey mines started operations in 1984, 1991 and 2014 respectively.

Primary Metals/Minerals: Thermal and high-volume metallurgical coal.

Secondary Metals/Minerals: None stated.

Geology/Mineralisation: The Pennsylvania Mining Complex mines its reserves from the Pittsburgh No 8 coal seam, which is a contiguous formation of uniform, high heating thermal coal.

Reserves: Total recoverable reserves as at December 31, 2019, were estimated at 669-million tons, comprising 115-million tons for the Bailey mine, 325-million tons for the Enlow Fork mine, and 230-million tons for the Harvey mine.

Resources: Not stated.

Mining Method: Longwall mining, a highly automated underground mining technique that produces large volumes of coal at lower costs, compared with other underground mining methods.

Major Infrastructure and Equipment: The complex includes a central coal processing facility that washes and processes up to 8 200 t/h of coal. The facility includes nine raw coal silos and six clean coal silos, as well as on-site logistics infrastructure including a dual-batch train loadout facility.

The dual-batch facility operates 24/7 and loads up to 9 000 t/h of coal and ten unit trains a day.

Prospects: None stated
