Thank goodness for Basel. Banks kicked and screamed when it was imposed on them after the 2008 financial crisis but it is standing the world of banking in good stead during the coronavirus pandemic, particularly through the capital and liquidity provisions laid down in Basel III.
What must happen now is a Basel equivalent in global health.
Even if carbon emitters kick and scream, they must be made to recognise the health imperatives of a post-Covid-19 world. Those health standards must include vehicle emission excellence, and even the White House must not be allowed to pull down what protects all of us on this planet.
Clean electricity generation must be mandated, along with industrial air pollution prevention and water purity insistence.
