NO SILVER LINING

The plan of TSX-listed Gabriel Resources to mine gold and silver from a proposed opencast operation in Ros,ia Montana˘ in the Carpathian Mountains, has hit strong opposition from marchers, like these in Bucharest, who were among an estimated 4 000 who staged one of the longest-running demonstrations in postcommunist Romania to stop the project’s go-ahead. Although Gabriel acquired a mining licence in 1999, it has been stalled by the refusal of government to award it an environmental permit for a mine that will provide 900 jobs for 16 years. Parliament will pronounce next month whether it will be allowed to go ahead, amid fears that the project threatens ancient Roman mining galleries and could cause cyanide pollution.
