NEW BEGINNINGS

The 128-year-old Chamber of Mines of South Africa is heading for a new beginning under new president Mxolisi Mgojo, 57, CEO of the R40-billion, 6 000-employee, black-controlled mining company Exxaro Resources, a company with mining experience in coal, mineral sands, zinc and iron-ore and which is also a generator of renewable energy. The organisation, which is operating in a changing environment, also has an additional vice president in Royal Bafokeng Platinum CEO Steve Phiri, plus two re-elected vice presidents in Andile Sangqu, the executive head of Anglo American South Africa, and Neal Froneman, the CEO of Sibanye. The Zambezi Protocol, a blueprint developed by the Brenthurst Foundation for solving the current crisis in African mining, is the rebranding chamber’s new strategic beacon.
