Mining production, mineral sales decrease in June

Mining production decreased by 8% year-on-year in June, Statistics South Africa (Stats SA) reports.

The largest negative contributors were gold (-28.6% and contributing -4.7 percentage points); platinum-group metals (PGMs) (-9.8% and contributing -2.4 percentage points); and coal (-6% and contributing -1.6 percentage points).

Seasonally adjusted mining production also decreased by 1.4% in June compared with May. This followed month-on-month changes of 1.2% in May and -3.8% in April.

Seasonally adjusted mining production decreased by 3.4% in the second quarter of the year compared with the first quarter.

The largest negative contributors were gold (-11.7% and contributing -1.7 percentage points); coal (-5.7% and contributing -1.5 percentage points); manganese ore (-12.9% and contributing -1 percentage point); and diamonds (-19.1% and contributing -1 percentage point).

MINERAL SALES

Mineral sales at current prices decreased by 6.1% year-on-year in June.

The biggest negative contributors were PGMs (-30.8% and contributing -12.8 percentage points); gold (-54.4% and contributing -7.9 percentage points); and iron-ore (-22.5% and contributing -3.4 percentage points).

Coal (71.1% and contributing 11 percentage points) was a significant positive contributor.

Seasonally adjusted mineral sales at current prices decreased by 15.9% in June compared with May.

This followed month-on-month changes of 12.1% in May and -0.4% in April.

The seasonally adjusted value of mineral sales at current prices was 11.2% higher in the second quarter than in the first quarter of this year.
