Marula back on track

When Impala Platinum (Implats) paid Platexco R1-billion for the Winnaarshoek property in 2000, it did not anticipate some of the difficulties it would experience underground at its Marula mine.

However, after a complete rethink of itsmining layout, Marula looks to be back on track to achieve its ramp-up targets.

Marula general manager Pieter Sandilands, who was transferred from Implats’ Impala mining operations near Rustenburg with a brief to bring Marula back on track, explains: “In the beginning, the mine design was based on the Kroondal UG2 type layout, and it was decided that both mining and mineral processing would be run bycontractors with a small owner’s teamoverseeing the management of the oper-ation.
