Malawi, Moz to study interconnector

The Electricity Supply Corporation of Malawi (Escom) and Mozambique power utility EdM have issued an invitation to consulting firms interested in undertaking a feasibility study for an interconnector linking the two countries’ electricity grids and to develop a conceptual design and prepare tender documents for the project.

The closing date for the submission of expressions of interest was January 27.

The $85-million interconnector project will be financed with loans secured from the World Bank’s International Development Asso-ciation.

In a related development, Escom is inviting international bids for the supply and delivery of various power transmission equipment.

The equipment includes 46 power system protection relays, various direct current systems, test equipment, cables, radio equipment, self-supporting steel microwave towers, dredger hoses, earthing transformers and a transformer oil regeneration plant.

The deadline for the submission of bids is March 4.
