LONG ROAD TO WATER FREEDOM

South Africa’s Trans Caledon Tunnel Authority (TCTA) has been tasked with implementing what Water Minister Nomvula Mokonyane (centre) described as the long-term solution for turning acid mine drainage (AMD) into safe drinking water. TCTA AMD project manager Craig Hasenjager is seen leading the Minister and Ekurhuleni executive mayor Mondli Gungubele (right) through the short-term AMD treatment plant at East Rand Proprietary Mines’ old south-west vertical shaft in Germiston, where the pH of the AMD water is lifted and the metals removed. The long-term solution will also remove the salts and make the water safe again.
