Name of the Project
Lithium hydroxide converter.

Location
Eastern Europe.

Rock Tech Lithium.

Project Description
The project involves the possible development of eastern Europe’s first lithium hydroxide converter.

The proposed converter will refine lithium-bearing rock into high-purity lithium hydroxide, which the electric vehicle (EV) industry and its suppliers require to manufacture batteries for EVs.

The proposed converter is expected to produce about 24 000 t/y of lithium hydroxide, equivalent to the volume needed to equip about 500 000 electric cars with lithium-ion batteries.

Potential Job Creation
The proposed converter is expected to provide significant and enduring economic benefits, including the direct and indirect creation of more than 500 jobs during its construction and operation.

Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
About €400-million.

Latest Developments
Rock Tech signed a nonbinding memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Romania government on March 8.

The MoU provides for cooperation and support in the company’s search for a location in Romania for one of the company’s planned lithium hydroxide converters and, in the longer term, the construction and operation of such a converter.

A key factor in the site selection process will be access to regional infrastructure such as transportation links and a rail connection.
