The Chamber of Minerals and Energy of Western Australia (CME) has announced the appointment of Simon Trott as its new president.

Trott, currently serving as the CE of Rio Tinto Iron Ore in Western Australia, steps into the role succeeding Brandon Craig, who stepped down to take on the role of president Americas with BHP.

The announcement came during CME’s 123rd annual general meeting, where Bill Beament from Develop Global was re-elected to the VP role, and Sanjiv Manchanda from Roy Hill was appointed as VP.

With more than two decades of experience within Rio Tinto across various operational, commercial and business development roles spanning different commodities, Trott brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to his new position.

Welcoming Trott's appointment, CME CEO Rebecca Tomkinson emphasised his extensive experience and leadership qualities in the mining and resources sector. She underscored the pivotal nature of the presidency, particularly during times of significant challenges and opportunities for the industry as it navigates state and federal election cycles.

Tomkinson also took a moment to acknowledge outgoing president Craig, commending his dedicated service to CME during his tenure. Craig’s leadership experience with BHP spanning over two decades provided valuable insights and contributions to the role, which he approached with dedication and passion.
