JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – Professional services firm EY has selected Kumba Iron Ore as the overall winner of its Excellence in Integrated Reporting Awards for 2016.

For the awards, EY considered the top 100 JSE-listed companies and top State-owned entities (SOEs). The awards were adjudicated by the University of Cape Town’s College of Accounting.

EY also recognised Oceana Group, Liberty Holdings, Sasol, Redefine Properties, Truworths, Vodacom, Nedbank, Anglo American and Barclays Africa among the best performing companies in terms of integrated reporting.

“There is no doubt that the integrated reports of those companies that take integrated reporting seriously are continually improving, while the integrated reports of those companies that do not, are showing very little improvement,” says College of Accounting associate professor Mark Graham.

He adds that the gap between those reports that are ranked as “excellent” and those that rank in the “average” and “progress to be made” categories is clearly widening each year.

Meanwhile, the SOEs were adjudicated on the same basis as the JSE-listed entities; however, owing to the requirements of the Public Finance Management Act, they were ranked separately.

Two SOEs – the Development Bank of Southern Africa and Transnet – were recognised for excellence in integrated reporting.
