JOHANNESBURG (miningweekly.com) – The Geological Survey of Finland has, on behalf of Finnish diamond exploration company Karelian Diamond Resources, discovered a rare diamond in the Kuhmo region of eastern Finland.

The diamond is a clear, pale green dodecahedron and measures 0.7 mm x 0.75 mm x 0.7 mm.

Karelian noted that the discovery was rare and significant, given that it was allied with the discovery of high concentrations of kimberlitic indicator minerals in the area, strongly suggesting that a diamondiferous kimberlite is present.

“This is very exciting news to find such a diamond in till which is a very rare event and makes me very excited about the potential of the area and the discovery of the source of this diamond,” commented Karelian chairperson Richard Conroy.
