‘Home away from home’ accommodation for mine

ACCOMMODATION CAMP Speedspace provided comfortable customised modular accommodation units

Prefabricated site accommodation supplier Speedspace has completed the installation of a management camp for diversified miner Vedanta Resources’ zinc subsidiary Vedanta Zinc International’s Gamsberg project in February.

The Gamsberg project is part of the Black Mountain Mining (BMM) operation and is located about 30 km from BMM’s base at Aggeneys, in the Northern Cape. The project aims to exploit the undeveloped zinc orebody; it will include an openpit mine and a dedicated processing plant.

Management for the project includes main contractor and engineering services provider ELB, as well as other contractors and those involved in surrounding projects. The remote location of the mine resulted in an ideal opportunity for Speedspace to establish a management camp together with camp services provider Significant Site Services (SSS).

Speedspace is responsible for the supply of comfortable, customised modular accommodation units, while remote site construction and maintenance provider SSS takes care of camp catering and facility management, which includes bookings, cleaning, catering and laundry.

Speedspace provided 81 rooms with shared ablutions for management and 21 en-suite rooms for senior management. “We are expanding this camp to host an additional 28 management rooms and 12 senior management rooms,” says Speedspace sales director Rudolph Wiggett.

The buildings are relocatable parkmore buildings built to sub-Saharan standards. “They are fully insulated with 40 mm polyurethane sandwich panels; the rooms were also supplied with split air conditioners,” says Wiggett.
