Location
Gladstone State Development Area (SDA), in Queensland, Australia.

Project Owner/s
Alpha HPA.

Project Description
A definitive feasibility study (DFS) has confirmed the project as technically and financially compelling.

The project envisages the HPA operation producing 10 000 dry tonnes a year from an industrial chemical feedstock.

The HPA First project will produce more than 99.99% of pure alumina and does not have a fixed mine life.

Potential Job Creation
The plant could create 120 jobs.

Net Present Value/Internal Rate of Return
Not stated.

Capital Expenditure
The project has a preproduction capital cost of A$308.13-million.

Planned Start/End Date
Stage 1, which is fully funded, will enable Alpha to start commercial production from August 2022. Stage 2, the full-scale project, will start in parallel with Stage 1, and is scheduled to be operating commercially by 2024.

Latest Developments
Alpha HPA and fellow-listed Orica have expanded their strategic partnership, with Orica to take a 5% stake in Alpha HPA.

Under the subscription agreement, Orica will subscribe for more than 44.98-million shares in Alpha HPA for an investment of A$19.8-million.

The funds will be used to accelerate the final engineering and product marketing for the full-scale HPA First project, where Orica is the key chemical counterparty, and to advance feasibility studies on the potential of an additional HPA manufacturing facility in North America, with the remaining funds to be used for general working capital.

“The Alpha HPA First project . . .  has demonstrated how industrial partnerships can optimise resource use, simultaneously creating value and reducing waste,” Orica MD and CEO Sanjeev Gandhi has said.

Key Contracts, Suppliers and Consultants
Prudentia Process Consulting (DFS and cost estimation); Prudentia and HPAlumina (pilot plant, engineering) and Aecom (permitting approvals).
